More Than Just Music

Music in Our Daily Lives

Music is a form of art that is within everyone’s lives. Whether you listen to country, pop, or R&B, music is everywhere. Music has definitely played a huge role in my life. Anytime I find the time, I get my device and headphones and jam out to my favorite songs. To me, music isn’t just a beat or melody with some lyrics, it’s my escape. Music has as much power as the artists who make the songs come alive. Everyone who loves music has a favorite artist or group. For me, that’s a kpop group called BTS.

Finding my Favorite Group

A few years ago I rarely listened to music. Sure I would sing along to the music on the radio but I never really listened to music for pleasure. I remember listening to BTS for the first time. At the time, I was 11 years old and my friends showed me one of their music videos. I didn’t understand the lyrics, but I remember liking their music and how catchy it was. Of course, when I got home I listened to more of their songs and researched a bit more about them. I am half Korean and knowing that a kpop group from a small country could make it so big in America was outstanding to me. I was so excited that Korean culture and entertainment were becoming acknowledged all over the world.

The Message Behind the Words

I was part of the fandom for around two to three years before I stopped listening to them. At the time, I was not at my best and had no motivation to even listen to music anymore. I was struggling with school and didn’t love myself, quarantine only made it worse. Around the start of this school year, I got back into BTS. Now when I listen to BTS it’s not because it’s catchy, but because of the message behind it. When BTS sings about topics such as loving yourself and not feeling alone, I feel so loved and happy. The songs on their new album talk about how during quarantine we all may feel alone, but we’re still united, and life will go on. Their message is so strong, and I will always look up to that.

The Positive Impact of Music

Not only do they have an amazing message, but they’re such great people in general. Despite them being one of the biggest groups of all time, they still manage to care about their fans. They strive to always do their best for us. That is something that I’ve always admired and looked up to. They also don’t let the fame get to their head. I’ve seen so many videos of them and they seem so genuine. They’ve always been themselves no matter their popularity and social status. Seeing big celebrities like BTS being so kind and authentic really restores my faith in society. I know it sounds silly but I seriously wouldn’t know if I’d be the person I am today if it wasn’t for BTS. They have helped me tremendously. I am forever grateful.
